Breaking The Chains Of Sugar Addiction Part I

How many times have you gone super clean on your diet, and after about a week get an unbearable, overwhelming gotta- have-it-now-I-am -turning-into-a-psycho craving for sugar that ends you face down in a bowl of brownie batter sprinkled with Goldfish crackers?

I get it.  For years, and I mean YEARS...I did the same!  (Only I couldn't bring myself to eat Goldfish crackers, because they have little smiling faces and I feel bad about chewing them.)

I tried all kinds of different ways to avoid this from happening, and for some reason, eventually found myself back on the volatile yo-yo.  It was exhausting and I KNEW there had to be a better way of doing this.

It just took me a REALLY long time to get it all straight.  And in the words of one of the most famous quoted women of our time, "Ain't nobody got time fo' dat!"

Let's do this:  Let's take a quick minute and breathe some life into this situation, because CLEARLY, you're not the only person that this happens to, ok?

For starters, lemme be the first to tell you:  The volatile yo-yo is not your fate.

Secondly, let's be logical about this.

If you're reading my blog, there is no question about the fact that you are an intelligent person who is well-read.

You probably know by now that there IS such a thing as a Sugar Addiction.  Part of what you’re experiencing when you pull sugar out of your daily is withdrawals.  That's obstacle #1.  What most people don't realize is that it goes farther than that.

When you pull sugar out, you're also pulling out calories and carbs.  So what happens is (even though your intent is on pointe, and you are making a positive change) that you usually also drastically cutting back on your calories, nutrients and what your body has become accustomed to for its fuel source

That's an important distinction-because as you move to "clean up" and improve your nutrition, you're training your body into new habits-including what it seeks as its go-to fuel source.  And since the body is always using energy (even while you sleep) it always needs a fuel source.

OH, AND BE ADVISED:  Even though you may have fat deposits on your body which it could use for energy; that's not the first place your body looks to get energy from.   (Not to mention the fact that your body requires energy to tap into those stores).

So you can see why it's been so hard to kick the sugar habit- you're trying to handle withdrawals in the setting of a significant caloric and nutrient deficit AND you're trying to put up new preferential energy seeking habits for your body.   Never thought about it like that, did ya?  I share that with you not to give you a back door escape to excuse you, but to shine a light on what usually leaves you and millions of others disappointed, frustrated and swirling the bowl towards self-induction into the Hall of (Self) Shame.

This is why I am so emphatic about having your Nutrition handled properly.   Most people (and I used to be the same!) have bad nutritional/dieting habits.  The habit is to cut back on calories, but oftentimes what's left after the cutback is not enough to fuel your body.

And on the flip side, even if the calories are sufficient, they're usually nutritionally void or suboptimal, which affects things like thyroid hormone production, reproductive/menstrual cycles, the speed of your metabolism, how fast and strong your hair, nails and skin grow/turnover.

So when I'm speaking with a prospective Client who is frustrated by not being successful at pulling sugars out of their life, I won't in good conscience just lay down mere tactics on how to do it.  Best practice and best outcome for the peeps I work with starts with a Consultation so that I can learn EXACTLY what's going on with you:  how do you spend your time, what do you do for a living, what's your sleep schedule, are you on a regular Physical Training Program (if so, what's your training split)-ALL OF IT.  MY JOB is to Position You To Win and DeVelop a STRATEGY customized for you to be successful for the LONG TERM.    Capeesh?

That's how we roll in this Academy, and that's why our people get such great results.

If you'd like to move the needle a little farther on this whole concept of pulling the sugars out, allow me to wet your whistle and share that what we've talked about up to this point is ONLY ONE PORTION of the physiologic issue in breaking the chains of sugar addiction.  We've got some other things to consider with this as well.  Continue reading, and I'll quickly hash through these things for you so that you understand:

1)  What you/your Client are up against

2)  Why you continue to crash and burn, and

3)  A few tactics you can deploy to get a better outcome; with full disclosure, they are most effective when they are organized in a STRATEGIC and CUSTOMIZED fashion.
